Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar found himself in the spotlight for both triumph and tribulation following his team’s nail-biting 12-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025).
While Patidar’s explosive 64 runs off 32 balls earned him the Player of the Match award and steered RCB to a commanding total of 221/5, the celebrations were tempered by an INR 12 lakh fine imposed on him for maintaining a slow over-rate during the second innings of the 20th match of the ongoing IPL season.
The penalty, announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday, marks RCB’s first over-rate offense of the season under Article 2.2 of the league’s Code of Conduct.

"As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Patidar was fined INR 12 lakhs," an IPL statement read as quoted.
He became the fourth captain to be reprimanded for this violation in the IPL 2025, following Mumbai Indians’ Hardik Pandya, Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) Rishabh Pant, and Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) Riyan Parag.
RCB Overwhelm MI in IPL 2025 ThrillerÂ
Despite the financial setback, Patidar’s leadership and batting prowess were the highlights in the match versus MI that showcased RCB’s top form.Â
Batting first after MI won the toss and opted to field, RCB faced an early jolt with Phil Salt’s (4 runs off 2 balls) departure. However, a blistering 91-run partnership between Virat Kohli (67 runs off 42 balls) and Devdutt Padikkal (37 runs off 22 balls) set the stage for Patidar’s fireworks. The captain’s aggressive knock, laced with five fours and four sixes, alongside Jitesh Sharma’s unbeaten 40 runs off 19 deliveries, propelled RCB to a daunting total of 221 runs that proved just out of MI’s reach.
The chase saw Mumbai Indians falter early, slipping to 99/4 in 12 overs before a fiery 89-run stand between Tilak Varma (56 runs off 29 balls) and Hardik Pandya (42 runs off 15 balls) threatened to turn the tide. Yet, RCB’s bowlers, led by Krunal Pandya’s clutch 4 wickets from 45 runs in the slog overs, held their nerve to secure a 12-run win.

RCB’s Performance in IPL 2025
This victory bolstered RCB’s impressive start, placing them third on the IPL 2025 points table with three victories in four matches, all secured away from home. Patidar, who took over the captaincy reins this season, is growing in stature as a leader capable of steering RCB past formidable opponents like Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and now Mumbai Indians.Â
As RCB prepares to face Delhi Capitals (DC) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 10, Patidar will look to maintain his team’s momentum while ensuring they stay within the IPL’s over-rate stipulations. For now, the 31-year-old can savor a hard-fought win, even as he digs into his pockets to settle the league’s penalty.Â
